Let me share with you my simple rules in food storage at room temperature.
1. FIRST IN, FIRST OUT
- New canned, boxed, dried foods must be stored at the back of the shelf so that old ones may be consumed first.
2. READ THE LABEL
- Make sure to check the label on canned or boxed foods to see how they should be stored. Most food items must be stored in cool, dry places but it does not apply to all.
This is the cabinet where we store our canned, boxed, and dried foods, spices, and condiments. It is located in a cool and dry place. |
3. BE CAREFUL AND SAFE
- If you have built-in cabinets above the stove or near the window exposed to direct heat or sunlight, please DON'T store food in those places! It can cause canned goods to expand and explode while moisture can build up inside boxed foods . Just intend those areas for non-food items.
- Food items should not be stored in cabinets under the sink where they can be damaged or spoiled by sweating pipes, leaks, or even chemicals, insecticides, or paints that we usually store in those areas.
