Intel® Rolls Out Rebuilding Program For Storm-Hit School Infrastructure in Leyte

Posted on 08:05 by thinger

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.", said Nelson Mandela.

Education is the wealth that can't be stolen from us. It is as important as fulfilling our basic needs. If we are well-educated, we can go places, live better lives, reach our aspirations, make way for the next generations' good future, help others, and make the world a better place.

Intel Foundation in partnership with Department of Education and Philippine Business for Social Progress work hand in hand to rebuild the Sto. Niño Elementary School in Tanauan, Leyte, which was damaged by Typhoon Yolanda. The Leytenos are so blessed to have these agencies make dreams into reality.

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – In line with its commitment to improve education, Intel Foundation together with its employees worldwide, today announced ongoing efforts to rebuild the Sto. Niño Elementary School in Tanauan, Leyte, which was damaged by Typhoon Yolanda. Intel has partnered with the Department of Education (DepEd) and country’s largest corporate-led social development organization Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) to implement the reconstruction program aimed at reestablishing an even better and stronger school for students and teachers of the municipality.

Intel Philippines Country Manager Calum Chisholm (2nd from left) joins members of the Sto. Niño Elementary School administration at the reconstruction site in Tanuan, Leyte. Intel, together with the Department of Education and the Philippine Busines for Social Progress, will help restore normalcy in the academic system by rehabilitating school buildings.

“At Intel, we believe that education must remain a primary concern in times of adversity in order to inspire and prepare the youth for the global challenges ahead. This initiative is a testament to our unwavering dedication to provide access to teaching and learning opportunities for the youth that are critical to each community’s development,” said Intel Philippines Country Manager Calum Chisholm. “Intel believes that education is an important investment that a community makes for its future as it is instrumental to achieving greater social and economic opportunities for children.”

“By building classrooms, we can help secure a long-term recovery for the residents of Tanauan.” – Intel Philippines Country Manager Calum Chisholm

Intel and 2,400 of its employees from across the globe have raised a total of USD375,000 (PHP16.5M) which the Intel Foundation matched to fund the completion of  four new disaster-resilient buildings with 10 classrooms for the benefit of over 500 students in the primary level. The facilities will replace the damaged buildings and will be equipped with teachers’ tables and chairs, standard school armchairs, separate washrooms for boys and girls, and ramps to provide easy access for children with disabilities. The new buildings of Sto. Nino Elementary School will be more structurally-sound to withstand future typhoons. It will also include child-friendly spaces and will be accessible to those with disabilities. With the support of its partners on the ground, Intel plans to turn over the new classrooms to DepEd in time for the upcoming 2015 academic year.

The project will support DepEd in restoring school operations in Sto. Nino Elementary School. The new school will have walls, floors, and partitions that can withstand up to three hours of fire, compared to the conventional one-hour fire resistant rating. To ensure stronger defense against seismic events and typhoons, the structure will be built with a distance of one meter above the original ground line for flood and will be resistant to 250kph wind, compared to the conventional 200kph wind load design.

All of the public schools in Tanauan were damaged by Typhoon Yolanda in some way. Sto. Niño Elementary School was one of the schools that have been rendered unusable and therefore cited by DepEd as a critical structure to rebuild.

“Our primary goal is to drive the early recovery of the school communities severely affected by Yolanda. We feel that this collaboration with Intel and the Philippine Business for Social Progress will be instrumental to our ongoing endeavor and are optimistic about the sustainable results of the program,” remarked DepEd Undersecretary Mario Deriquito.

To ensure the impact of the rebuilding program, Intel will continue to work closely with the local government unit of Tanauan, DepEd, and implementation partner PBSP to deploy a sustainability plan focused on overall facility management and maintenance.

“PBSP and Intel understand that conducive learning environments stimulate growth among the youth and their teachers as well. We are prepared to align with the school administration and Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) in order to execute an effective maintenance scheme for the new classrooms so that the next generation of students can enjoy quality facilities as well,” said PBSP Visayas Executive Committee Chairman Jose Antonio Aboitiz.

Apart from offering immediate and most sustainable action to its beneficiaries, Intel seeks to foster growth in student engagement or enrollment rate, and increase the number of primary level graduates. Intel has been working with the local government units of Tanauan to deliver the Intel Easy Steps program in the community e-centers as a means to impart ICT skills to the members of the community.

Bosch Launches Tindog Pilipinas to Rehabilitate Central & Eastern Visayas

Posted on 17:51 by thinger
It was four months since Typhoon Yolanda devastated Visayas. I still remember the emotion that I felt during that time that made me write an article calling our brethren to help the victims.

The aftermath is still being felt by the victims up to this moment. It's never easy to start over again. But there are organizations, agencies, and civilians who help make it possible for the victims to stand up again and rebuild what is lost.

Rebuilding Program in Yolanda-hit Cities Expected to be Complete in 2014

Manila, Philippines – Bosch today announced its ongoing efforts with Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild community facilities in Visayan cities that were affected by Typhoon Yolanda. Dubbed Tindog Pilipinas, the reconstruction project is part of Bosch's commitment to education and community development, and will focus on construction of schools and barangay centers that were destroyed by the typhoon.

Serving as the conduit organization for the Tindog Pilipinas project, Primavera - the foundation established by Bosch to support youth development initiatives worldwide - has raised a total of €174,000 largely from Robert Bosch GmbH in Stuttgart, Germany and contributions from Bosch employees across the globe. In tandem with long-term building partner Habitat for Humanity, Bosch will use the funds to construct six multi-purpose centers, three school buildings, and three libraries in Central and Eastern Visayas by the end of the year. Areas that will benefit from this effort are Daanbantayan and Medellin in Cebu, as well as Tacloban, Palo, Alang-alang and Tanauan in Leyte.

In February, President of Robert Bosch Southeast Asia Martin Hayes and Robert Bosch Inc. (Philippines) Managing Director Andrew Powell inspected and selected the rebuilding project’s target reconstruction locations in the Visayas region. They were joined by former Bosch Philippines Managing Director and current Robert Bosch Limited (Thailand) Managing Director Joseph Hong.

"The damage brought on by Typhoon Yolanda has spurred global action to reestablish communities and bring hope to the Filipino nation," said Andrew Powell, Managing Director, Robert Bosch Philippines. “We are overwhelmed by the response of our company, having received donations from virtually every Bosch organization in the world. Bosch will work alongside the Filipino community to further rehabilitate the severely affected areas and provide sustainable support, specifically for schools.”

Tindog Pilipinas will also engage Bosch's local pool of associates to aid in the yearlong initiative. This coming May, employees of Bosch will take part in site clearing to pave the way for the the construction of target structures in Cebu and Leyte. Bosch will work with Habitat for Humanity to complete as many structures as possible, equipping workers with Bosch power tools to help fast-track the construction and aim for turnover of key facilities in time for the upcoming school year in June.

“Our collaboration with Bosch is a great leap towards a better Filipino community. By providing long-term, sustainable solutions to the devastated learning environments in Visayas, we are able to make an impact to the youth and extend opportunities for a brighter future,” said Habitat for Humanity Philippines CEO Charlie Ayco.

Typhoon Yolanda, a category five storm that struck the country in November 2013, caused catastrophic damage to hundreds of buildings, power supplies, roads, and several thousands who were left homeless.
